Big Think

An inspirational away day

OVERVIEW

Broadsword were delighted to work on the Big Think, an inspirational away day for 480 ITV employees at the BFI IMAX Waterloo.

As the official preferred supplier to the IMAX, Broadsword’s Executive Producer, Matt Green and Creative Director, Martin Walton, worked collaboratively to design and deliver a solution that would transform the cinema auditorium into a bold and brave events space, with an impactful visual identity, enabling delegates to ‘challenge the status quo’ and ‘step out of the box’.

IMAX Projection

Taking full advantage of the sophistication of digital IMAX projection and 12,000 Watt digital surround sound, Broadsword’s concept was one of going on a journey that would be mirrored on screen. Each ‘scene’ was its own vista, made up from elements which you might see on the page of a passport. The style of the slide design also matched the concept – using passport style imagery and the delicate scrolling pen styles for backgrounds.

The scenes animated on screen by scrolling up from the bottom and they also had depth and perspective in 2.5D. The effect is called Parallax Scrolling. Each scene appeared as a frame from a strip of film which was pulled upwards from the bottom of the screen, which was a landscape, but the boundaries of the frame were created by a sky at the top. Other elements such as speaker photos, captions and live video elements also moved on screen as part of the scene, preserving the depth of the frame.

Fusing the physical with the digital

With an eclectic mix of innovative and powerful speakers and presenters, including Piers Morgan, Phillip Schofield, John Amaechi, Sir Peter Bazalgette , Serena Armitage, Amy Peake, John de Mol, Kevin Lygo, Jonathan Ross and Harvey Weinstein, Broadsword installed an intimate backdrop for the stage, fusing the physical with the digital, with neon EL wire which mirrored the guilloche patterns on the big screen. This worked really well on camera, which was important as the day’s proceedings were live streamed across Europe and the U.S.
